Madonna
Ray of Light
(Maverick)
The best thing about the new Madonna album is that it isn't really a Madonna album; it's a William Orbit album with Madonna on vocals. An artist in his own right, producer Orbit has developed a style represented on his Strange Cargo series of albums, and now on Ray of Light. His poppy, minor-key techno fits well with Madonna's smooth vocals and this album, without a doubt, is both her best and most mature. There is no need to program your CD player with this disc, as every song is worth a listen. Besides the hit, "Ray of Light," the disc also offers quality bits like "Swim," "Frozen," and "Sky Fits Heaven." Being a new mother, Madonna's disc would be incomplete without a song for her child, and it is in "Little Star" that we begin to sense her metamorphosis from young slut to responsible parent - and that's a good thing, because the Hollywood tramp routine was getting old. Despite this change, the CD booklet still has some racy photos of Madonna that are sure to arouse us all.
